DOST develops wound dressing from honey

Experts from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute – Department of Science and Technology (PNRI-DOST) have developed an effective wound dressing from local honey sources in the Philippines. Taking advantage of the antimicrobial properties of these local, readily available products, the DOST-PNRI experts produced a cheaper and comparable alternative – if not a better one already – to antibiotics for treating exudating wounds and burns. “Honey has, since ancient days, been used for medicinal purposes. Its composition makes it a very effective agent for healing wounds,” said Biomedical Research Section Head Zenaida De Guzman.

According to De Guzman, honey is ideal as a wound dressing not only for its antimicrobial and potentially anti-inflammatory composition, but also for its low pH level that is suitable for fast

DOST pushes eHealth technologies for smarter healthcare

The Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) trailblazing projects for the health sector  took the spotlight at the First Philippine eHealth Summit held last February 4 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City to pave the way for smarter healthcare by maximizing information and communications technology (ICT).

Using ICT for health, also known as eHealth, “is envisioned to transcend the constraints brought about by the country’s archipelagic setup and limited budget,” DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo said during the event.

DOST projects for smarter healthcare include the RxBox, eHealth Technology Assisted Boards for LGU Efficiency and Transparency (e-TABLET), and the Philippine Health Information Exchange (PHIE).

PCHRD turns 32, theme connects R &D with Emergency Health Management

The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) will celebrate its 32nd Anniversary on 14 March 2014, at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, Makati City.

With the theme, “The Filipino Resilience in Crisis: Connecting Health R&D and Emergency Health Management,” the forum will focus on how health R&D can help in improving the country’s capacity to manage health situations in times of crises.

Champions of health and health research will grace the event including Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique T. Ona, Department of Science and Technology Secretary (DOST) Mario G. Montejo and DOH Undersecretary Teodoro J. Herbosa. Albay Governor Jose Clemente S. Salceda will be the anniversary keynote speaker.

Summer is the best time to fight dengue mosquitoes—DOST study

Summer may be the best time to eliminate the breeding sites of dengue-causing mosquitoes to prevent a dengue epidemic in the coming rainy season.

This was revealed by Dr. Frances Edillo of the University of San Carlos in her talk during the 32nd anniversary celebration of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

Her statement stems from a DOST-PCHRD funded study, which she led in Cebu City, proving that transovarial transmission of the dengue virus occurs in the study site. Transovarial transmission is the transmission of a virus from the mother mosquito to its offspring.  Horizontal transmission, on the other hand, is the transmission from mosquito to humans and vice versa.

Dried beans and nuts, cheap but good protein sources

Did you know that Filipino household members are not getting enough protein? This is based on the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) which is 80 percent of the Recommended Energy and Nutrient lntake (RENI). This was reported by the 7th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) conducted in 2008 by the Food and Nutrition Research lnstitute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST).

Protein is a nutrient needed by the human body for growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues.

While meat, fish, poultry and eggs are excellent sources of high quality protein, these foods may not be affordable to many Filipino households.
